How do you make money from your art?
Well, Liz Mac has a very unique take on this, and it dealt a lot with the word “fun”. But this talk was more than just “do something that excites you”; it was an engaging pep talk about how to properly engage those you want to attract with your art. Attendees filed into the Daily Grind Cafe & Art Bar to start the night of with a bit of socializing, then soak up Liz’s wisdom.
Though only in the freelance illustration business for four years, Liz Mac made a name for herself using her skills AND her personality. She learned the hard way that it takes more than talent to sell art – you also have to think, act, and sell, creatively to stand out in a crowd. She shared her “origin story” of bad luck turned art inspiration, and how she changed her underdog status into a viable source of income.
To practice what she preached, Liz even introduced us to the idea of thinking outside the box in terms of delighting our ideal clients/audience/patrons. How? By doing a live oversized blind contour of E3C regular Graham.
Q&A from attendees included:
- How do you balance personal and commercial/commission work?
- How can an artist work smarter, not harder?
- What about those of us who arn’t necessarily extroverts or outgoing? How do we connect with an audience.
You can check out her sides from the presentation, which contains a lot of great inspirational content when you need it the most!
